R. Michael Devitt earned his BA degree in History, with a minor in Philosophy, from Santa Clara University in 1962, and his Juris Doctorate from Loyola Law School in 1965. He was admitted to the Bar on January 5, 1966. While awaiting the Bar results he worked for Steve Crossman, City Attorney for Pismo Beach. After being admitted, Michael went to work with the Law Office of Lloyd E. Somogyi, who was the county public defender at that time. Michael opened his own practice in 1974.
For 23 years, from 1966 to 1989, Mr. Devitt practiced criminal defense, among other areas, including family law. His criminal practice included approximately 8 murder cases. One case of note involved an individual who confessed to murder on June 12, 1966, the day before Miranda v. Arizona was decided by the Supreme Court of the United States.
For 43 years, from the spring of 1967 to the fall of 2010, Mr. Devitt taught Business Law at Cuesta College. For approximately 13 years, from 1976 to 1989, he represented the Associated Students, Inc. at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. During his time with Cal Poly, he handled a multitude of legal issues such as contested ASI presidential elections and employment cases.
In addition to an active trial practice, Mr. Devitt handled a number of cases before the Court of Appeal (Second District and Fifth District) and the State Supreme Court. One published case of note was the Marriage of Tusinger [170 Cal. App. 3d 82 (1985)]. For his numerous contributions to the San Luis Obispo County Bar Bulletin, he was the awarded the inaugural Frank J. Pentangelo Award. Today his practice focuses primarily on family law, while also taking work in general and civil litigation, trusts, and estates.
He is involved with University of Santa Clara Alumni programs, and is on the Board of Directors for the San Luis Obispo College of Law.
